Ewa Kulesza’s exhibition is a collection of openwork objects – cages. It is a combination of soft, organic materials incorporated into linear, geometric, compact forms. Like soft flesh covering a skeleton, it is a compact, inseparable tissue. In this way, the structure of closure and limitation is revealed. It bears marks – traces of the presence of life. The objects we see are neither the beginning, a sketch, nor the end, the final shape. They remain suspended, unfinished. Both light, due to their material openness, and heavy, due to the number of associations forming in the mind of the viewer.
Ewa Kulesza – she graduated in Sculpture and Drawing as well as Photography from the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznań. Scholarship holder of the Ministry of Culture and Art and the City of Poznań. Resident of Bern, Switzerland, and Nordic Kunst Dale in Norway. Member of the Secondary Archive. She co-runs the Artistic Practice and Research studio at the University of Arts in Poznań. To date, she has exhibited her works at the Wozownia Art Gallery in Toruń, the Profile Foundation, the Program Gallery, the Action Gallery, the Czapski Palace in Warsaw, the At Gallery, the Centrala Gallery, the CK Zamek Gallery, the Arsenał Gallery, the Łęctwo Gallery, the National Museum in Poznań, Terminal 08, MOS Gorzów Wielkopolski, the National Museum in Szczecin, the Rektorat Gallery, the BWA Zielona Góra Gallery, BWA Wrocław Główny, Jan Tarasin Art Gallery in Kalisz, El Gallery in Elbląg, Wieża Ciśnień Gallery in Konin, Galeria de Capitana in Aveiro, Portugal, Museum of Masashino Art University in Tokyo, Japan, Haus am Luezofplatz in Berlin, Galeria ZAK Spandau in Berlin. In 2007, she participated in the 5th Berliner Kunstsalon/Artfair.
She works at the intersection of sculpture and photography. She uses ephemeral and changeable materials such as ash, brick dust and photosensitive emulsion. She creates installations and art books, working at the intersection of sculpture and photography. She observes the process of transferring real events and objects into the intangible resource of memory, the impermanence of memories, transience. She confronts the viewer with objects of unclear purpose, which, through constant exposure to light-sensitive substances covering them, become palimpsestic carriers of events, including those that escape human perception.
