As a part of Bydgoszcz Academy of Art we invite you to an embroidery workshop –“Kitchen Tapestry – led by Joanna Michalska, known as “Nitkomaniaczka.” The workshop is aimed at both those with embroidery experience and those just starting out.

Join us for a unique workshop on embroidering kitchen tapestries, which will be conducted by Joanna Michalska “Nitkomaniaczka” – a scholarship holder of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage and a three-time scholarship holder in Bydgoszcz. Joanna’s projects include: “Embroidered tapestries with the Bydgoszcz Canal,” “Gadki Szczecin – kitchen tapestries” in Bydgoszcz and Warsaw, and “Embroidered tapestries with Ochota” in the Ochota district of Warsaw. She is the initiator of the project “Tapestries embroidered with dialects from various regions of Poland,” which was awarded a distinction by the National Cultural Centre, and founder of the active Facebook group “Tapestries embroidered with dialects.” She runs the Nitkomaniacy Foundation, promoting the culture of traditional embroidery.

What will happen during the workshop?
– In the theoretical part:
You will learn about the brief history of kitchen tapestries in Poland.
You’ll look at classic patterns based on photographs.
– In the practical part:
You will learn the basic embroidery stitches needed to make your own kitchen tapestry.
You’ll choose a pattern to embroider – we have prepared Bydgoszcz dialect patterns, contemporary patterns and some classic designs especially for the occasion.
You will learn contemporary techniques for transferring pattern to fabric.
You will find out which fabrics and threads work best for making tapestry.
You will receive practical tips on how to display your finished tapestry at home.
