Join us for another lecture of the Bydgoszcz Academy of Art.

If we were to name one device that has evolved and come to symbolise the transformations of civilisation in the 20th century, many of us would probably say the car. Over the course of this invention’s history, spanning more than a century, its appearance and the functions it served have evolved. From the earliest designs modelled on horse-drawn vehicles, whose very movement amazed the public; through to dangerous rally cars that gave drivers and spectators an adrenaline rush; to cars for the masses, giving millions of people a sense of freedom. We’ll set off on a journey through the history of cars and their evolving designs with Szymon Czyżyk, a historian and curator of the wheeled vehicle collection at the Museum of Engineering and Technology in Kraków.

Szymon Czyżyk – historian, employee of the Museum of Engineering and Technology in Kraków. Part of the museum’s collection which includes wheeled vehicles, rail vehicles and telecommunications is under his care. Co-author and member of the curatorial team of the 2024 Sybilla Award-winning permanent exhibition of the Museum of Engineering and Technology in Krakow, entitled “The City. Techno-sensitivity.” For years, he has been gathering knowledge in historical anthropology, sociology, 19th and 20th century history.
