Subject: Sweet insects: bees in Polish folk culture
Presented by: Aleksandra Zubrycka
The May sessions will introduce participants to the fascinating world of beliefs, symbols and traditions associated with bees in Polish folk culture. We will explain the important role bees played in rural communities of the past – as guardians of prosperity, symbols of diligence, and creatures held in almost magical esteem. We will look at their presence and the use of the honey they produce during rituals, festivals and everyday life.
During the practical session, the senior citizens will make their own candles from beeswax foundation.
