The dualism of Hubert Dolinkiewicz’s work is expressed in two painting series developed in parallel by the artist: Metaphysical Landscapes and Songs. Metaphysical Landscapes are are fantastic spaces shaped by colour planes constructed from linear, smooth brushstrokes – the artist’s gestures. They are filled with signs that serve as signposts, passages and meeting places for the wanderer, who, apart from the artist, may be the viewer of the painting. Sometimes the signs themselves become entities, protagonists of the composition. The topos of the road and the traveller (homo viator) is a motif depicting the search, the potential for transformation, the resolution of dilemmas, and the pursuit of universal values. In contrast, signs play a prominent role in the Songs cycle. They are carefully arranged, subject to the rigour of a precisely drawn composition, or rather a written piece – modelled on musical notation or synaesthetic experiments stimulated by sound inspirations recorded on the back of each Song. […]
As Hubert Dolinkiewicz declares, he puts the signs at the centre. They come from the Book of Signs – an artistic collection actually created by the author, consisting of adaptations of motifs intuitively recognised as symbols (often interpreted within the confines of one’s immediate cultural circle, as I myself have been caught doing) and those that have a fantastical or simplified form. Starting with the oldest plant motifs – including those from Persian herbaria and 16th century herb books, medieval manuscripts and icon borders – the paintings from the Metaphysical Landscape series begin to fill with seeds, shrubs, trunks, and forms resembling sea anemones or corals. On the other hand, there are inanimate elements that build the composition, such as stones, rocks, mountains, sarcophagi, palisades, and elements of transition: mandorlas, halos, and luminous portals. Signs in the landscape, like milestones, mark the path to attempting to understand the unknown – transcendence. They offer the opportunity to meet at the top of the mountain, at a place of worship marked by a stone, at a sarcophagus, or among the seeds of life being reborn.
