What was childhood like during the Polish People’s Republic? What toys did the youngest children play with at home, what games did they play in the playground, and what did they use at school? From September 22nd, 2026, the Municipal Gallery bwa in Bydgoszcz will is hosting an exhibition entitled “Children in the People’s Republic of Poland. A nostalgic journey,” which provides an insight into the realities of childhood in Poland from the 1950s to 1989. The items on display include toys (vehicles, toy soldiers, board games), books and magazines, school supplies, costumes and everyday objects. There there is also plenty of characters from children’s popular culture, featured in literature and on television. Although mass-produced items predominate, it is worth remembering that, in a world where access to goods and the media was limited, the imagination played a huge role. Exhibition Children in the People’s Republic of Poland. A nostalgic journey – is both for those who remember those times and for those who know the People’s Republic of Poland only from stories.
