What is individuality in a globalised world today? Isn’t it risky to use this term for artistic strategies in the postmodern world of art? How should we look at the photos on the computer today while reading Benjamin’s essay “Work of art in the age of mechanical reproduction”? What was the breakthrough moment when photography started being treated as an independent discipline of art? How has the medium changed after the appearance of the digital camera? Even if we continue to identify photography with a material object, does the fact of its physical existence still matter? I will try to answer these questions by presenting the profiles of selected artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. (Marek Noniewicz)
